[admin post] [sticky entry] Admin Post: Sticky: Introductions

I ridiculously don't know what I'm doing in starting a community, but I think it's a valuable addition to the Dreamwidth community. Therefore, this is a work in progress, and mistakes may be made and updates may be posted as needed.

Welcome to Tarot Studies! This started as an idea for a place for me to write my daily Tarot card draws as I work with my decks and get feedback from others on how to interpret the cards. Now I'd like to encourage everyone who would like to do a daily Tarot draw to do it here, where other members can comment, encourage, and discuss the results of your reading.

Also, if you'd like to talk about your decks, spreads, and anything you are doing to study your cards, please do so!

If you'd like a tag for your own daily draws, please comment on this entry and I'll make one with your username.

Welcome and have fun!

Hello and a spread

Hi all--

This is my first time posting in this group. I just got the Fifth Spirit Tarot deck ( www.fifthspirittarot.com/) and I wanted to try a little spread with it.

I've been feeling apprehensive because this is the first Christmas that I won't be spending with extended family. The spread I used was a three-card spread: situation, action to take, and outcome.

At first, I decided I was going to use reversals.

1 - 6 of Cups reversed. This made sense to me as a situation because I was used to the nostalgia of going to my childhood home for Christmas, but that wasn't happening this year. So the original card, but blocked.

2 - 5 of Swords reversed. I interpreted this as "Don't get into dumb fights with your nuclear family," (aka my spouse and kid) but then I wasn't sure if that would be a valid reversal meeting.

3 - 5 of Wands upright. So it seemed like, "No matter what you do, you're bound for some disagreements and conflict."

I was kind of frustrated and not sure I was reading the reversals correctly. So then I decided to redo the reading, only this time with the intention of only using upright meanings. Oddly enough, I only drew upright cards this time.

1 - 4 of Cups - I can see this card too, as having more than I need, or not appreciating the gifts I receive enough. Kind of feeling emotionally tapped out too.

2 - The Hermit - This makes sense to me as an advice card, especially when paired with the first reading. Just take some time out to be by yourself tomorrow.

3 - The Fool - maybe a return to a feeling of innocence, a feeling of Christmas in spite of everything? I hope so, though I'm not sure how that relates to the first reading.

Feel free to leave suggestions or your favorite spreads below! I hope everyone is doing okay with Solstice/Christmas week 2020.

Australian October Tarot Challenge!

Hi everyone! *taps microphone* Is this thing on? (I know, I know, I'm a dork).

I've been participating in daily draws via monthly challenges for a while now, and I've noticed they're always incredibly Eurocentric, and almost always biased towards the United States. There's nothing wrong with that, and they're A LOT of fun, but I wanted to do something for the Australian tarot readers!

Everyone of course is welcome to join, do as many or as few questions as you want! You're welcome to post what you draw here (it'd be great to revive this little community) or on your own blog or social media. This is the first, but hopefully won't be the last. Happy tarot reading, everyone! (A huge huge thanks to [personal profile] calissa for her photography and layouts, and contributing some of the questions).

30 Day Tarot Challenge?

A lot of artists etc. say that thirty day challenges are a great way to improve on something you want to practice more, so I was wondering if anyone knows any good ones for tarot? Not so much the ones that are just questions about how long you've been doing tarot or whatever, but ones that encourage you to pick up your cards every day.

Is anyone there?

How active is this community? I'd love to join a DW community to find other tarot readers but it seems like a lot of groups are a bit deserted. If anyone is active drop a comment and say hi!

Anyone looking for German Tarot cards?

I'm looking to get rid of a whole bunch of my books - the ones relevant to this community are two sets of tarot cards + interpretation book, a celtic dragon one and a Leonardo da Vinci one - both in German. Is there anyone here who understands the language and might be interested in these? I'd ask you to share the cost of shipping with me if it's more than 10€, but otherwise it'd be at no cost to you. :)

(If you happen to want anything else from that collection, I'm of course also happy to send you that!)

Little Red Tarot courses

I'm doing them. A Card a Day and Alternative Tarot. I'm doing the journaling part over Never Unmindful–ward. (Unless I don't want to put it out there Googleable, in which case it'll be under lock at [personal profile] alexeigynaix. Comment on the friends-only banner if you want to be added, though if I don't know you so well then I won't promise you will be.)

Here goes nothing? XD

I got a new deck!

Shadowscapes Tarot is absolutely a thing of beauty.

I'm using the deck interview spread here below:

deck interview )

This all kind of sounds like Shadowscapes is a good deck for me to use for regular draws to inspire creative work? :-D

for the benefit of anyone wanting to design a RWS-based deck but reproportion the genders & etc

I have counted up the figures on the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck by gender. (The images on learntarot.com do not have one single person of color. Not one.) There are 123 altogether, if we don't count at all the wedding party on the Four of Wands (I can't get a proper head count on those from the image on learntarot.com).

Below the cut is a table with my counts, divided into rows by card sorted by suit and into columns by gender: "I" is "indeterminate" (I couldn't identify the gender of the figure) and "O" for "other" is angels and devils and disembodied hands—but not animals. "T" totals the figures on that card.

I hope you all find this useful!

poorly formatted table that I should fix to be not-tab-delimited on account of Dreamwidth doesn't like tab characters; sorry about this )

perhaps relevant to interests

Fool’s Journey: The Fascinating Life of Pamela Colman Smith, the possibly-queer woman of color who illustrated the Rider-Waite-Smith deck.

(On that note, today's draw, from the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, is the Hanged Man. I note the keyword "discernment" in the deck booklet. This is significant for Reasons.)

Blog name help!

 Hey y'all!

I'm looking to start a pagan/tarot blog, and I need some help figuring out a name (because figuring out a name is the hardest). I'm also doing a bit of preliminary interest-gauging to start narrowing down my niche in the blogosphere.

Would you be able to fill out a VERY brief survey? There might be more where this comes from, but for now this is very simple. You can fill out the survey here.

Also: if anyone would like a free reading done, I could certainly use more practice. Please comment on this post or message me, and we'll figure something out.

When the Cards are Warning...

My cards keep warning me about someone who is going to be trying to trick or deceive me, bad advice, and things like that. It's starting to get me paranoid. Anyone have any advice on this? I'm a bit unsure of how to proceed. When I ask what I can do, it just says trust myself and everything will be fine.

General Discussion

My deck is not being very friendly with me lately. I don't think that I am using it enough, I'd gone a few weeks without using it, maybe it's just mad at me.

Any good spreads to use for feeling restless and stuck?

Howl at the Moon Tarot Spread

Posting here to share, and also so I remember this spread for next full moon.

Howl at the Moon: Communication Tarot Spread

2 2-card draws

So something kind of odd happened this morning while I was doing a two-card draw. I'm working with the Cosmos deck, a new one that I haven't worked with too extensively yet. Trying to do semi-regular one or two card draws to get to know it. For me, two card draws are energy - action draws, so what am I feeling and what actions will I take in the day.

I was shuffling my deck, and a card jumped out - 7 of fire (Hydra). I kept shuffling, and another card jumped out - The Lovers (Cancer, and funnily enough my Sun sign). So I decided to put them aside, that they would inform the two cards I draw for the day. Well, what I ultimately drew were 6 of Earth reversed (Dorado) (Rx) and 5 of Earth (Triangulum + Norma + Triangulum Australe).

The 7 of fire is perseverance against great odds - it's not success, it's just survival in difficult situations. That strikes a definite chord for my energy today.

The Lovers, of course, is a card about nurturing, family, connecting with those you love. The card in this deck shows Hera healing the crab - very nurturing.

6 of Earth Rx is about greed, and perhaps about taking unnecessary/ill-advised risks.

5 of Earth is about the fruits of your labor. Pay attention to the details, enjoy the journey, and work on your craftsmanship and skills.

So here's how I read them:

7 of Fire is my energy for the day - I feel like the work is never ending, and I feel guilty for taking time for myself. This is Not Good.

The 5 of Earth is my action - I should just focus on doing well, on the process, put my nose to the grindstone. This is CROSSED with the Lovers - be good to myself, engage in community that is meaningful, but also nurture myself because I clearly need it.

And 6 of Earth Rx is ... just a reminder not to take an unnecessary risk, not to take the short cut (no matter how tempting it will be), and to keep my ethics in my view.

The thing is, it would also make sense to read this as two separate 2-card draws. 7 of Fire and The Lovers really resonate together to me, and so to the 5 of Earth and the 6 of Earth Rx.

How do you handle cards that jump out? Do you see them as shedding extra light on your spread, or do you see them as an essential part of the spread - not extras at all?

A very sleepy reading: november monthly spread

Did a simple 3 card spread, because I'm pretty tired.

Do other people get those readings where you're just like, "WHY ARE YOU TELLING ME THE TRUTH THAT I DON'T WANT TO HEAR LALALALA" ?

Also, I'm not totally sure what's going on with the 2 slipped out cards. How do you usually think of/consider them?

2 cards which slipped out:
The Moon - confusion, introspection, rely on intuition

IV of swords - rest and recovery

Actual spread
Past: VII of coins - long term success, "Querent will be facing set backs to projects and speculations which are in many ways the result of her overcautiousness. Anxiety and a fear of failing result from, but also exacerbate, this cautious approach"

Hahaha, this is definitely a "WHY ARE YOU TELLING ME MY EXACT LIFE TAROT?!" moment.

Present: VIII of cups - dissatisfaction with current life and drawn towards new pastures and challenges

Well... yes. I'm in a very transitional spot right now, both personally and professionally, and basically can't wait to move on to something stabler

Future: Ace of Wands (Inverted) - new starts, but ones which are dogged by problems, wrong timing or lack of initiative

Ok, this is interesting. I want to brush it off, of course, because it's not the most positive thing, but I do see where my current movements towards change are pretty... non-commital and lackluster, and quite frankly, ALL of the timing is wrong.

New Deck!

I want to break in my new deck, Deviant Moon Tarot. Does anyone want a 3 card spread?

Just let me know what sort of general question you're thinking of and I'll do a draw. If you want something more specific (or very vague) just lemme know. :)
